Triple H sadly had to retire from the ring after suffering heart failure in 2021. Yet, thanks to his executive position as Chief Content Officer, he remains one of WWE’s key management figures, with it understood that he controls almost all of WWE’s creative direction.
However, while speaking on one of his many YouTube shows, former WWE, WCW, and TNA writer Vince Russo stated that the two-time WWE Hall of Famer isn’t qualified for the role, declaring there are “so many freaking holes creatively,” and suggesting that Shane McMahon should lead creative.
“I could see him being an agent or producer. I could see him in that role, bro. I’ll go as far as to say, even if you wanted to let him and Shawn run NXT, because that really is developmental, even then, I’m fine with that. But the spot he’s in now? If he did not marry Stephanie, no way, no how would he ever be in that spot. Absolutely not … All we have to look at is the product. And there are so many freaking holes creatively that I question every week, man, is this guy qualified for the job if he did not marry Stephanie? I think that’s a fair question. There’s no question if he never married Stephanie, that spot should be Shane McMahon’s.”-Vince Russo
Triple H married Vince McMahon’s daughter Stephanie in 2003, having initially been aligned with her on-screen as part of a storyline. Subsequently, they had three daughters together, and until Stephanie’s WWE resignation, the pair had worked closely together. Therefore, many of Triple H’s detractors claim he only accomplished what he did in the business due to marrying into what was once wrestling’s most influential family, although that is debatable.
